About

Chub Bowl

With its inherently playful yet minimalistic design, Chub stands out for its evident sturdiness, a tribute to the solid, durable quality of wooden interior objects from the designer’s 1970’s childhood.

Chub is crafted from FSCTM certified (FSC-C163461) ash and distinguished by four chubby feet placed at each corner in an almost monolithic manner. An elegantly curved bowl rests atop, adding a utilitarian element to the design, which presents itself as a decorative object and a functional bowl in equal measure. Sami Kallio elaborates: “The idea was to create something between a podium and a bowl. Sculptural enough to be its own centerpiece, but simple enough to let any contents shine”.

Sami Kallio

Sami Kallio was born in Helsinki, Finland and grew up in Gothenburg, Sweden. He is educated as a furniture carpenter and holds a bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Furniture and Interior Architecture from HDK-Valand - Academy of Art and Design.
In 2011, he established his own studio and workshop in Gothenburg, focusing on wood - a material he has a lifelong passion for, having honed his skills in traditional woodworking craftsmanship, such as compression moulding and woodturning, in Sweden. The studio combines modern industrial techniques with handcrafted methods to design furniture and interiors that blend classic shapes into contemporary expressions. The goal of every design is to ensure durability and availability to the public.
Inspiration can come from anywhere, and it's crucial to him that the visual form, material, and function harmonize.

"I am a very hands-on individual, so many of my discoveries and developments take place in wood, within the workshop. Recurring themes in my work revolve around the intersection of tradition and modern technology."
